Funding pensions

Published: Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

State Rep. David McSweeney, in his guest column in the Northwest Herald on pension reform (Nov. 10), cited meaningful pension reform would include provisions that “limit future cost of living increases, increase retirement age, and adopt a pension salary cap.” Interesting that he never mentioned funding the pension plan according to the law.

How can there be meaningful reform when politicians advocate for change but do not address or follow the funding laws for pensions?

Illinois politicians have not fully made the legally required payments to TRS for more than 30 years.

Any reform must force the members of the Illinois General Assembly to follow the laws they pass, i.e., funding the pension plans according to the law.
