Harvard man dies after vehicle strikes utility pole

A Harvard man died after his vehicle struck a utility pole Saturday morning in Hartland Township, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

Howard E. Walker, 83, was pronounced dead at Rockford Memorial Hospital on Saturday after the vehicle he was driving struck two culverts and a utility pole head-on in an unincorporated area in Hartland Township.

Deputies were called to a field near McGuire and Lindwall roads on Saturday around 11 a.m. for a report of a single-vehicle crash with injuries, according to a news release.

Walker was found seriously injured and was taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

Investigators determined that the vehicle Walker was driving east on McGuire Road left the roadway north for unknown reasons, traveling several hundred feet through a field before striking the culverts and the utility pole, the news release states.

He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
