Police from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office don protective masks and footwear Thursday before entering the house on the 500 block of North Country Club Drive in McHenry as they collect evidence. The owner of a home, where the skeletal remains of a woman were found earlier this week, has been charged with concealing her death, according to the sheriff’s office.

WOODSTOCK – William J. Ross refused to waive extradition from Nevada, putting a minor obstacle before local prosecutors in getting the man back to McHenry County to face charges alleging that he concealed a homicide.

The skeletal remains of a still unidentified woman were found last week in a sealed room at Ross' home at 518 N. Country Club Drive, in McHenry.

Using telephone records, authorities located Ross in the Las Vegas area.

The 62-year-old remains in custody at the Clark County, Nev. Correctional Facility. A Clark County Court spokesperson said Ross on Tuesday refused to waive extradition at a court appearance there.

McHenry County Assistant State's Attorney Michael Combs says his office plans to bring Ross to Illinois to face charges here. He explained that prosecutors will secure a governor's warrant to extradite Ross.

"The only issue is proving that he is the same William Ross that's wanted out of Illinois," Combs explained.

The woman found in Ross' home appeared to be dead for some time and was badly decomposed. Investigators have said no one had been living in the home for more than a year and a half. According to the criminal complaint, her remains were placed in a plastic bag.

Authorities could not verify her identity.

Combs said the Coroner's and Sheriff's offices are attempting to ascertain her identity, and he hoped to have the results soon. The coroner's office declined to comment.

The investigation is ongoing.
