Jacobs junior Ryan Sargent did everything necessary to catch the eyes of college coaches in Bloomington, Ind. in August.

Sargent was invited to the Prep Baseball Report Midwest Futures Games as part of the Illinois team. While on Indiana University’s campus, Sargent got four hits, stole a base and made every play in center field.

Ohio University was interested right away. So were Indiana and Missouri. But it was Ohio, which got Sargent on campus for an unofficial visit and workout. And Sargent was sold.

Sargent committed to Bobcats head coach Rob Smith on Wednesday evening. Ohio recruited Sargent as an outfielder, although he was an effective pitcher for Jacobs as well.

“I’ve been in contact with Ohio since those games,” Sargent said. “I worked out for them a week and a half ago and they sent me an offer that was too good to pass up. I like the coaches, I like where the program’s going. I feel like we can win some [Mid-American Conference] championships there.”

Sargent hit .280 with eight RBIs in 59 plate appearances for the Golden Eagles last spring. He was a valuable utility player on a Class 4A supersectional champion team.

“Ryan’s an outstanding center fielder,” Jacobs coach Jamie Murray said. “We knew he could pitch right away, and we played him at third base, worked him some at shortstop and in the outfield. He has a lot of tools. He’s very well-composed. He doesn’t allow things to bother him.”

Sargent played over the summer for the Illinois Indians, which play out of Mount Prospect and draw players from all over the Midwest. Sargent was 4 for 6 with a double and three singles in two games with Illinois at the Prep Baseball Report event in Indiana.

“Ohio felt like a good fit and environment,” Sargent said. “I felt I could flourish and be a good baseball player there.”
