Not the GOP’s job

To the Editor:

The front page of the Nov. 6 Northwest Herald had a story about the passage of same-sex marriage legislation.

This is great news. For far too long, we have treated a segment of the population like second-class citizens.

Seven out of eight of our local representatives voted against this measure, with Jack Franks, the sole Democrat from McHenry County, voting in favor. It also should be noted that Sen. Pam Althoff was the only one who lacked the courage of her convictions and didn’t vote. Much as I disagree with her Republican colleagues, at least they voted for what they believed in.

My issue with the Republicans’ vote was best summed up by Rep. Barbara Wheeler, who said that as a Catholic, her church, priest and bishop have told her this is not going to be good for our communities. The separation of Church and State is delineated in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Wheeler was elected to defend the rights of all the citizens of her community, not enforce the teachings of her church. If she wants to do that then she should start with “Judge not lest ye be judged.”

I’m confident God is in favor of this legislation and does not think homosexuality is a sin. However, if He does, let Him be the one to enforce His rules in heaven. It’s not the Republicans’ job to enforce them on Earth.
