Bullet prompts lockdown at Matthews Middle School in Island Lake

ISLAND LAKE – Matthews Middle School was locked down for more than four hours Thursday after a student found a bullet in a school hallway.

The student turned the bullet in to a teacher, who notified administration, prompting the lockdown about 8 a.m.

Island Lake police conducted a locker-by-locker search and a canine search, checked security footage and took other “necessary investigatory actions,” according to a notice posted on District 118’s website.

Teachers and students resumed their school day at 12:30 p.m.

An investigation is ongoing, the notice said.
