To the Editor:
It takes courage to stand for right, especially when you have to stand alone. So, thank you, Rep. Jack Franks, for daring to vote to protect the rights of a minority population, the LGBT community, even when none of our other McHenry County representatives to Springfield would. History will prove you right, as it did others who stood for social justice and enlightenment.
Like many in our community, I am a traditionalist. The idea of same-sex people being able to “marry” each other was pretty hard for me to accept. I preferred giving equal protections under the banner of civil unions, but know that would have required federal intervention to change semantics in laws, business contracts, etc. – impossible under a tea party-controlled Congress. So the only way to enable equal rights in all respects was through existing terminology by individual states.
Well, so be it. We are all God’s children and should be able to have the same rights to live and love and make mistakes and do our best while we are here. So, thank you, Rep. Franks. Many good people in McHenry County recognize you did right by voting to legalize gay marriage in Illinois.
