To the Editor:
In your Nov. 14 story, your headline states that District 156 teachers are holding to their old contract. Their contract has expired, and I hope the school board has the guts to not give them an increase in salary, health insurance or pension benefits.
The average teacher in this district makes $72,196 a year. The number of pupil attendance days is 176 days plus four teacher institute days plus five built-in emergency days, according to the school calendar. Therefore, based on 185 days total, they would be earning $390.25 per day or $48.78 per hour for an eight-hour day. How many taxpayers in McHenry make this kind of income along with the benefits they receive?
I don’t blame the teachers for wanting more, but this big mess was started with the unions. We all know about how the pension funds are way underfunded. We have got to put a stop to these union negotiations. School board, please stand your ground.
