Fundraiser ongoing for New China restaurant

FOX RIVER GROVE – An online fundraiser is taking place to help a local Chinese restaurant reopen after a fire earlier this year.

In January, a grease fire severely damaged the kitchen of New China and forced it to close. Since the fire, the restaurant has been required to bring the building up to present day codes.

However, work has not moved along as hoped.

The goal of the online fundraiser is $80,000.

If the fundraiser, which is scheduled to run through the end of the year, meets its goal, and if contractors are available, the restaurant would be able to open in eight weeks, said fundraiser organizer Mary Pahlke of Woodstock.

Pahlke has been a patron of the restaurant since 1984.

Among the work that is needed is new plumbing, floor drains, heating and cooling updates, electrical installation, sprinkler system installation and a new hood system for the kitchen, according to the fundraiser’s webpage.

Since the fire, the restaurant has participated in the village’s facade grant program to update the front exterior of the building.

The restaurant had been open for 37 years.

“They’ve provided so many people with their first jobs,” Pahlke said.
