Fake ComEd calls targeting Crystal Lake businesses

CRYSTAL LAKE – Fraudulent ComEd calls are targeting Crystal Lake businesses, attempting to extract payments for “unpaid bills,” according to the Crystal Lake Police Department.

The police department issued a news release Friday warning businesses of calls from a fake ComEd representative who is threatening to shut off power if outstanding balances are not paid immediately.

The caller advises the person to purchase a prepaid Visa card and requests a call back to take down the card number and pay off the balance.

When the business calls back, a ComEd recording is played stating there are telephone issues.

The phony representative then calls the business back to obtain the number, according to the release.

The correct ComEd numbers are 800-588-9477 for residential customers and 1-877-426-6331 for businesses.

Only businesses in Crystal Lake have been targeted so far, according to the release.
People who believe they have received a fraudulent call can call police at 815-356-3620.
