5 die in weekend crash in southern Illinois

McLEANSBORO – Five people were killed when a sport utility vehicle left a road, became airborne and overturned several times in southern Illinois.

Hamilton County Sheriff Greg Brenner said the driver, 49-year-old Darrell Delong of Collinsville, was the lone survivor of the wreck Saturday night near McLeansboro, about 100 miles southeast of St. Louis. Delong was listed in serious condition Monday at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind., hospital spokeswoman Becca Scott said.

Authorities said Delong was driving northbound when he lost control of the vehicle, which then went airborne before repeatedly overturning, ejecting five of the SUV's occupants.

Ron Ewald, the county's coroner, identified the fatalities as Tammy Delong, 35, Robert Parker, 49, and Lori Parker, 42, all of Collinsville, Diana Wright, 23, of McLeansboro, and a 16-year-old girl whose name was not immediately released.

Illinois State Police are assisting in the investigation.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
