Woodstock's Maura Beattie leads the pack Saturday at the Class 2A Belvidere Cross Country Sectional.

First Team

Kitty Allen, Marengo, Junior

Allen led the Indians to their fourth consecutive Big Northern Conference title and repeated as a Class 2A All-Stater with a 13th-place finish. Allen made a big jump in the second half of her sophomore season and built on that this season, taking second in the BNC Meet and third in the Belvidere Sectional.

Maura Beattie, Woodstock, Senior

Beattie lost two races while turning in her best high school season and finishing fifth in the Class 2A state meet. The only other race Beattie lost came in the FVC Meet to Jacobs’ Lauren Van Vlierbergen. She then won the Woodstock North Regional and Belvidere Sectional meets.

Lauren Opatrny, McHenry, Junior

Opatrny finished 16th in the Class 3A State Meet to earn All-State honors and cap an outstanding season. She was consistently among the top runners in big meets, including a third-place FVC finish and victories in the Palatine Regional and Schaumburg Sectional.

Morgan Schulz, Cary-Grove, Junior

Schulz was a rookie to cross country, but it hardly showed. She quickly adapted to the long races and was near the top in many of the invitationals the Trojans competed in. She finished fourth in the FVC Meet, fifth at the Palatine Regional and fourth at the Schaumburg Sectional. Schulz was in position to be close to All-State in Class 3A, but collapsed about 100 feet from the finish line and eventually finished last.

Lauren Van Vlierbergen, Jacobs, Junior

The Northwest Herald Girls Runner of the Year battled a hip problem through the summer that set back her training a bit, but once in the season, she found her fitness level and excelled. She won the FVC Meet, the Class 3A Hononegah Regional and the Waubonsie Valley Sectional before taking fourth in the state meet, the highest finish in school history.
