Bates: Attend McHenry Chamber's Christmas party

Published: Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

Tuesday night is McHenry Area Chamber’s annual Christmas party.

Hosted at 31 North from 5 to 7 p.m., we hope you will dust off that Christmas sweater and join us as we bring in the holidays. Yummies will be served, and door prizes will be received. Remember door prizes last year? Nothing says Christmas better than a T-shirt featuring Darth Vader in a Christmas hat.

Direct Design Ltd. will celebrate its 25-year anniversary Friday. To commemorate the milestone, owner John Swierk is observing the occasion with an open house from 3 to 8 p.m. at Direct Design’s office, 3321 S. Route 31, Prairie Grove. Enjoy a delicious menu from Brunch Café while listening to the sounds of Al’s Blues Faction.

Direct Design was started by Swierk in 1989. In 2012 the organization purchased Carroll Associates Architects from Palatine, becoming DDCA Architects – a full-service architectural firm serving retail, commercial, industrial and residential clients.

The McHenry Area Chamber invites you to attend the Bring Your Lunch N’ Learn session “Nexus – Doing Business in More Than 1 State,” presented Dec. 11 at the Chamber by Meaghan Wingbermuehle of Porte Brown.

Many companies in this modern business world find it necessary and beneficial to conduct activities in multiple states. The presentation will outline many of the out-of-state business activities that are protected from taxes under law, and other activities that could expose a business to multistate taxation. Having knowledge on nexus and state tax issues is necessary in getting your company on the right track to compliance, and prepares you before your company enters another state.

Lunch will be provided by Porte Brown. The event is free, but registration is required.  Call the Chamber at 815-385-4300, or register online at www.mchenrychamber.com.

As the end of the year approaches, this is a good time to consider taking advantage during 2014 of your membership, such as building relationships through mixers, young professionals, WINGs, committee involvement or referral groups; being a presenter at a box lunch and learn; or submitting free press releases through the Chamber’s newsletter to reach area residents.

• Kay Bates is executive director of the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce.
