ELGIN – A 55-year-old man was charged with the murder of an 88-year-old man who lived in same apartment building, Elgin police said in a news release.

Police said Matthew L. Stoecklein went into the apartment of John Poyer, strangled him and committed a theft.

Poyer's family found him dead Nov. 22 when they went to check on him after they had not heard from him in several days, the news release said. Stoecklein was charged this week following an investigation.

Stoecklein lived in the second floor apartment above Poyer at the intersection of Hiawatha Drive and Jefferson Street, police said.

Stoecklein has been charged with first-degree murder, home invasion and robbery.
