Bond set for suspects in theft, dragging of cop

ROMEOVILLE – Bond has been set for two suburban Chicago shoplifting suspects, including one charged with attempted murder in the wounding of a police officer dragged by the getaway car.

A third man who police say was driving the car was shot and wounded by the officer’s partner. He remains hospitalized and has not been charged. The officer was treated and released.

At Saturday’s hearing, a judge set bond at $400,000 for 51-year-old Robert L. Russell Jr. of Joliet, who police say was the passenger in the car. He’s charged with attempted murder.

Twenty-eight-year-old Gerald Chamberlain, also of Joliet, was arrested inside the store and is charged with retail theft.

The incident occurred Thursday night outside a Kohl’s store in Romeoville at the start of the holiday shopping rush.
