To the Editor:
Many have written about homosexual marriage in the letters-to-the-editor section of my hometown newspaper. Let’s get to the heart of the matter.
If there is no God, then why did it take so long to legalize homosexual marriage? And what are the next once-forbidden activities and relationships, desired among consenting adults, which are to be publicly expressed, tolerated, accepted and, ultimately, celebrated? Let’s keep expanding the boundaries for personal fulfillment, and the sooner the better. For we eat, drink and be merry, and then we die.
But if there is a God, and that God is the God of the Bible – of the patriarchs, Christmas, Easter and the founding immigrants of America and their descendents – then neither layman nor minister who speaks in the name of God may embrace homosexual marriage. It was never His plan.
God is not in the business of making errant people, myself among them, comfortable in the pleasure of their wayward thoughts, words and actions. He is in the business of exposing their waywardness, in slavery to Satan, and calling them to a new way of life as children of God, made possible through his Holy Spirit and his son, Jesus Christ. The old way of life is gone, and a new way of life, not of self-love but of sacrificial love, begins. This is the love God intended from the beginning.
So, follow people and politicians, or God? By God’s grace, I choose the Lord Jesus Christ.
