The IHSA board of directors announced Monday that lacrosse did not yet have the entry numbers of boys or girls teams to become an IHSA-sanctioned sport in the spring.
The IHSA needs 65 boys teams and 40 girls teams to make lacrosse a sanctioned sport. While there were 43 girls teams, there were 55 boys teams and the IHSA requires that both numbers be met for the state series to begin.
It means that local teams will remain as club sports that are recognized by their high schools.
“We remain confident that lacrosse will become a sanctioned IHSA sport in the near future,” IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman said. “The number of schools competing in the sport has continued to grow. However, we also know that financial restraints have prevented many schools from committing to the sport and believe it is in the best interest of the schools, and the sport, to wait until we reach the previously established benchmarks before beginning a State Series.”
