CRYSTAL LAKE – When Ruth Roper walked into Georgio’s Pizza Dec. 20, she had no idea she would win free pizza for an entire year.

But as the lucky purchaser of the 1 millionth pizza sold by the Crystal Lake pizzeria, she won exactly that, according to a news release from the restaurant.

"I'm in shock. I've never won anything in my whole life. We were in the bar area waiting for our table and I saw someone eating a pizza, it looked great so I decided to order one!” said Ms. Roper. “I had no idea that I had a chance to receive the millionth pizza."

Georgio’s, which has locations in Crystal Lake and South Barrington, knew its 1 millionth pizza would be sold before Christmas, said owner Brian Coli, who has owned and managed the business since its inception more than 11 years ago. The pizzeria made a point to come up with a fun campaign for the occasion.

“All the Georgio's servers and customers were clapping for Ruth as the pizza was delivered to the table," Coli said in a news release. "Customers were even coming over to her as they were leaving to congratulate her. It was really cute. The rest of the Georgio's guests (at both locations), dining when the 1,000,000th pizza was purchased, were given free desserts to join in the celebration0 It was a great night and Ruth's excitement really made it special.”

As the grand prize winner, Ruth Roper will receive free Georgio’s pizza for a year, the equivalent of one free pizza every month for 12 months.

To add to the celebration, Georgio’s decided to award an identical prize to Mary Ann Atkinson of South Barrington who purchased the 1,000,001th pizza at the South Barrington location.

Georgio’s also will donate the same free one-year supply of pizza – in the form of gift certificates – to both the Crystal Lake Food Pantry and the Project Hope Food Pantry of Barrington.
