Authorities: Elderly man dies in Urbana house fire

URBANA (AP) — Urbana officials say a 96-year-old man has died in a house fire.

Fire Marshal Phil Edwards said Tuesday that firefighters were called to the home around 10:45 Monday night. The man died after being taken to Carle Foundation Hospital.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports that (http://tinyurl.com/pmujhel ) the home was owned by William Sleator, and his brother-in-law, Nicholas Temperley, confirmed to the newspaper that Sleator had died in the fire.

The coroner's office did not immediately return phone and email messages from The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Urbana firefighters requested mutual aid from the Savoy Fire Department at midnight, after part of the second floor had collapsed onto the first floor.

The fire marshal says nobody else was home at the time of the fire.

He says the fire remains under investigation.
