Our View: Generosity brightens the season

The Northwest Herald Editorial Board offers this week’s thumbs up and thumbs down:

Thumbs up: To all of the generous area residents who donated their time and/or money to help make this holiday season a little brighter for those who truly needed it. If you volunteered to ring a bell for The Salvation Army outside a McHenry County store, donated to its Red Kettle campaign, helped out at a local food pantry or donated food to one, volunteered for a Toys for Tots campaign or bought a toy to contribute, or helped or contributed to any of the many other campaigns going on this time of year, thank you. Your acts of kindness are what the Christmas season is all about.

Thumbs down: To the consideration of taxing bicyclists in Chicago. Cycling is better for your health and better for the environment than driving a car or riding on public transportation. People should be encouraged to ride their bikes, not discouraged by having to pay a yearly tax. As one bike-friendly blogger wrote, what’s next? A shoe tax for walking on the sidewalk?

Thumbs up: To Crystal Lake resident Tom McNamara, who has ditched his home for an RV that he takes around the country to provide the homeless with new, dry socks. McNamara has already distributed thousands of socks to people from Mississippi and Missouri to Arizona and New Mexico. His next trip is planned for Phoenix. If you’d like to donate to McNamara’s cause, log onto www.gofundme.com and search “Sockman.”
