PARIS – A French hospital said retired Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is in critical condition after hitting his head during a skiing accident.

The Grenoble University Hospital Center said Schumacher arrived in a coma and underwent brain surgery after suffering a serious head trauma.

The seven-time F1 champion driver fell while skiing in the French Alps earlier Sunday and was transported by helicopter to Grenoble.
