To the Editor:
In the “Another View” editorial from the Monroe (La.) News-Star on Dec. 20, the writer expressed concern about U.S. education: “In the global exam, American students failed to reach the top 20 in math, science, or reading.”
Why are we surprised? Even good teachers cannot produce a superior product if the quality of the raw material keeps decreasing.
Searching for “Dumbing Down of America” on Google/Amazon will overwhelm you with links/books. Significantly, whether one compares intelligence or education level, there is an inverse relationship with birthrate. Quoting www.cdc.gov, “A women’s educational level is the best predictor of how many children she will have ... with the highest birth rates among women with the lowest educational attainment.”
Even with high unemployment over 9 percent during the recession, Congress, in November 2012, finally had to increase the number of H-1B visas to 200,000 per year for much-needed foreign high tech workers in math, science, engineering and technology.
Another “dumbing” factor is that many U.S. students don’t value education, a value, like religious beliefs and racial prejudices, developed before children have any critical thinking skills. Entertainment trumps learning.
My advice to many of my science students often fell on deaf ears: “The more you learn in this science course, the easier the next science course will be.” Deaf ears.
“Education increases your freedom because it increases your options.” Deaf ears.
“Education enriches your life even if it doesn’t enhance your income.” Deaf ears.
