Letters to the Editor

Amati should be gone

To the Editor:

Kudos to Northwest Herald reporter Kevin Craver for keeping Woodstock police Sgt. Chip Amati’s slap on the wrist in the news.

Craver is absolutely correct that anyone else would have been arrested, indicted and tried for their crimes.

However, there are other very guilty people involved in addition to Amati.

The Woodstock mayor should have told the police chief to get rid of this bad apple. The chief only had to tell the Police Commission to get rid of him, and he would have been fired. These commissions support their chief in circumstances such as this.

Regardless, the Police Commission should have fired him based on the evidence. Forget his good record because that excuse wouldn’t have worked for anyone else.

Finally, the public’s last line of defense from behavior such as this, especially from a public official, the state’s attorney, should have indicted Amati, but instead chose to look the other way.

So, mayor, chief, Police Commission and state’s attorney, shame on all of you. Thanks to you, the good citizens of Woodstock are going to be checking the name tags of the police they come into contact with very carefully, especially if they have young girls in the house, to make certain the officer they’re dealing with isn’t Amati. Wouldn’t you?

Nice to be a police sergeant in Woodstock, where it would appear, as Craver indicated, you’re bulletproof.
