CARY – A skate ski trail has been added at the Silver Creek Conservation Area in Cary.

Like cross country ski trails, skate trails are packed, however, they are not tracked, according to a news release from the McHenry County Conservation District. The trail at Silver Creek Conservation Area is about a mile and a half and a relatively flat loop.

Skate skiing has a more intense and faster technique, mimicking the movement of ice skaters by propelling themselves forward by pushing off the poles and skiing diagonally outward instead using the long slide of cross country skiing.

The McHenry County Conservation District had received a few inquiries in the past, but with the snow coming earlier and sticking around longer this year, staff was able to build the trail, according to a news release.

The parking area at Silver Creek Conservation Area is plowed and accommodates 12 to 15 areas. There are also restrooms.
