Missing tax reality

Published: Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 5:30 a.m. CST

To the Editor:

At a recent McHenry School Board District 15 meeting, members voted 5-2 to raise taxes, which will amount to about $30 per household.

This action was taken after submitting a budget that reflects a $38 million surplus. It is becoming evident that McHenry County school boards and city councils have no concept of the present economy or the fact that people are leaving our county at an alarming rate because they are being taxed out of their homes.

Perhaps it is time (way overdue) for a watch-dog effort to monitor every taxing body in the county and advise our residents of any impending agendas that affect taxes, levies, spending or loans.

Only two members of the District 15 board had the courage to vote "no" on the tax increase. Thank you to Erik Sivertsen and John O'Neill.
