1 dead, 1 missing after Chicago River rescue

CHICAGO — Authorities say one person died, one is hospitalized and one is missing after three people fell into the icy Chicago River shortly after midnight.

Chicago Police say Monday that a 26-year-old man died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital early Monday after he was pulled from the water when he jumped over a downtown fence to get a cellphone he'd dropped into the water.

A 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman tried to help, but fell in after him.

Rescue crews pulled the men from the water, but spent hours looking for the woman before suspending their search after about three hours. Police spokesman Amina Greer says a recovery mission is expected to begin sometime Monday morning.

Greer says the 23-year-old is in stable condition at St. Joseph Hospital.
