To the Editor:

It’s the new liberal banner. It sounds positive and uncontroversial. After all, we all want to progress, don’t we?

But progressivism isn’t what its advocates want everyone to think it is. It’s not a road to progress or any attempt to make progress. It’s a return to times in which groups fight among each other for government-distributed resources. Its objective is to use the power of government to design, order, mold and control society.

Under this idea, politicians and bureaucrats identify what they believe to be societal flaws and use government to “fix” them. It results in the practice of unlimited government and the supremacy of the state, which has the duty to perfect humanity.

To realize their goal, progressives must reject the Constitution, the Founders, individualism, God-given freedom and, in fact, God himself. Also, impediments to a progressive paradise are private property, capitalism and markets free of state intervention.

Today, its Obamacare’s birth-control mandate for the Little Sisters of the Poor and the administration’s disdain for religious conscience. Obamacare’s “fix” is for these nuns to sign a legal contract that the insurer “shall provide” contraception to enrollees independently and for free. But this contract directs others to provide birth control in their place and makes them complicit.

This is simply a raw statement of state power directing the religious to follow orders. Thus, Obamacare forces nuns who have taken a vow of chastity and minister for the dying to implicate themselves in what they consider to be grave moral wrongs.
