BENTON – Illinois State Police are investigating a weekend southern Illinois crash that killed a mother and her 9-year-old son.

Police say 34-year-old Melanie May of Benton and her son, Aaron May, died in the accident about 1 a.m. Saturday in Jefferson County.

Investigators say a 19-year-old Benton man was driving a Jeep also occupied by the Mays when that vehicle hit a guard rail and plunged into a creek bed, coming to rest on its top.

That driver was taken to a Mount Vernon hospital with injuries police don't consider life-threatening.

Funeral arrangements for May and her son are pending.
