Crystal Lake church to examine women's role in church

Published: Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 10:32 p.m. CDT

CRYSTAL LAKE – The First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake will host a two-day seminar on the leadership women provided in the early church and the dynamics of their subsequent suppression.

Gilbert Friend-Jones, senior minister at the First Congregational Church, and the Rev. Mary Kay Sauter, a Minneapolis-based clergywoman, will dive into recent research that suggests the early church embraced gender inclusivity where women served as bishops, elders, presbyters, deacons and scholars.

Participants in the seminar will study evidence from both sides of the argument and examine how certain scriptures are used today to restrict the self-determination and public leadership of women.

The seminar begins at 7:30 pm Friday and concludes at noon Feb. 1. A donation of $30 a person is suggested to help defray expenses. Advanced registration is requested.

For information or to register, call the church office at 815-459-6010.
