Fundraiser looks to help displaced McHenry residents

McHENRY – Residents of a fire-damaged apartment building won’t be able to move back in for at least another eight weeks.

The McHenry County Housing Authority has been sheltering 27 of 33 people who were displaced following a fire nearly two weeks ago at Riverside Hotel, a three-story, 40-unit apartment building at 3308 W. Elm St. in McHenry.

The owner of the building, Dick Buchert, did not return a call for comment.

The housing authority might be able continue paying for displaced residents area hotel stays about eight weeks if there is enough money in the budget, Community Service Director Sue Rose said.

The affected residents might have other fire-related expenses, she added.

To help, Corkscrew Pointe – one of the two downtown McHenry businesses that served as a makeshift gathering place following the Sunday morning fire where residents were connected with services – is partnering with the Polish Legion of American Veterans’ ladies auxiliary to put on a fundraiser.

The fundraiser will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Corkscrew Pointe, 1402 Riverside Drive.

There will be drink specials, free appetizers and burgers and a silent auction and raffles with prizes that include Bears and Cubs tickets.

Attendees are asked to donate $5 a person. Donations also can be made by depositing at any Charter One Bank using the trust account No. 4521532488.

For information, call 815-578-8360 or visit Corkscrew Pointe’s Facebook page.
