DANVILLE – Almost 60 years after he was discharged from the Army, an eastern Illinois veteran finally received the medals he earned during the Korean War.
The (Danville) Commercial-News reported Robert Paul Jaynes didn’t even think about getting his decorations when he left the military in 1954. Instead, he said he was “just glad to get home.”
The 84-year-old Danville man received his four medals and a citation Friday during a special ceremony at the Vermilion County War Museum. They were presented by U.S. Rep. John Shimkus.
Jaynes said receiving the medals is “quite an honor,” adding that he never thought he’d actually get the decorations.
After he returned home from the war, Jaynes became a farmer and later owned Hoopeston Implement Co.
