Athlete of the Week

Zach Gorney

Huntley, Senior

Gorney, a 6-foot-4 forward, had games of 18 and 16 points as the Red Raiders won two Fox Valley Conference Valley Division games for the week.

Gorney scored 18 points Tuesday as the Raiders defeated McHenry, 61-41. He came back with a team-high 16 points Friday as Huntley held off Jacobs, 48-45, in a pivotal FVC Valley game. With that victory, Huntley took a two-game lead in the loss column over Cary-Grove and Jacobs.

Gorney, who had been mired in a shooting slump with his mid-range shots, busted out at a crucial point in the game, hitting a 3-pointer and two 17-foot shots. Gorney’s 3 came when Huntley trailed, 38-35, late in the third quarter.

His other two long jumpers each came with the Raiders chasing Jacobs by a basket in the fourth quarter. After Gorney’s second shot, Huntley did not trail again.

“I found it at a good time, I guess, started hitting when we really needed it,” said Gorney, who recently announced he will play at NCAA Division III Benedictine University next year. “I hit it in the beginning of the year, and I’ve been slumping toward the middle, but this is the first time I’ve hit there in a few games.”

Chasing a milestone: Huntley’s Amanze Egekeze, a fourth-year varsity player, is closing in on 1,000 career points. Egekeze, a 6-foot-8 senior who signed with D-I Belmont, has 891 points and currently is third among area players at 18.3 points a game.

Crystal Lake South’s Austin Rogers likely would have passed 1,000 points, but the 6-2 senior forward suffered a knee injury last week that ended his high school career. Rogers, who has 820 points in two seasons, sustained a torn ACL, MCL, meniscus damage and a fractured bone in his right knee. Rogers leads the area at 23.4 points a game.

Nice preview: In Huntley’s FVC Valley victory over Jacobs, 48-45, Friday night a couple of freshmen – Jacobs’ Cameron Krutwig and Huntley’s Jack Bessey – gave fans a little glimpse of what will come in the future.

Krutwig scored nine points, with six coming in the third quarter while he was defended by Amanze Egekeze. On one move, he faked, pivoted and ducked under Egekeze to score.

Bessey scored only one basket, but it came at a critical time with Huntley trailing Jacobs, 38-35, late in the third quarter and tied the score at 38-38. Those two likely will provide a lot more big plays over the next three-plus seasons.
