Police urge awareness of scammers posing as ComEd reps

CRYSTAL LAKE – Scammers continue to target local businesses by posing as ComEd representatives.

The Crystal Lake Police Department has received new reports of fraud or attempted fraud, according to a release from the department.

During the scam, a caller says the business has late electric bills and threatens that the power will be shut off if the payments aren't made immediately.

The caller says they can accept payment over the phone by credit card or check, and asks for a call back to balance the account, the release said.

Only businesses have reported being targeted so far. The correct numbers for ComEd are 1-800-588-9477 for residential customers or 1-877-426-6331 for business customers.

The department urges individuals to never provide personal information or pay for anything over the phone when they believe they don't owe the requested funds. Attempted fraud should be reported to the Crystal Lake Police Department at 815-356-3620.
