Dad shot near Carbondale alternative high school

CARBONDALE – Southern Illinois authorities say they're searching for an 18-year-old student after a shooting near a Carbondale alternative high school.

Monday's shooting near a parking lot entrance at the Rebound school left the father of a student with "potentially life-threatening" injuries.

Authorities say a 17-year-old student is in custody in connection with the shooting that happened around noon. They're looking for the older teenager, who's wanted on an arrest warrant for attempted murder and weapons charges.

Police say the shooting took place after a fight "between acquaintances." It prompted a lockdown at the school and Carbondale Community High School, which is 2 miles away.

The Associated Press left messages with school superintendent Stephen Murphy. In a letter to parents, Murphy says extra police are being sent to the alternative school Tuesday.
