Our View: Recognition for the Raue
The Northwest Herald Editorial Board offers this week’s thumbs up and thumbs down:
Thumbs up: To the upcoming McHenry County Historical Society’s plaquing of the former El Tovar Theatre in downtown Crystal Lake that we all now know as the Raue Center for the Arts. Towns will change and progress, but it’s important to acknowledge some of our unique buildings, including this beautiful theater, which is one of a few fantastic McHenry County hubs for the arts.
Thumbs down: To Richmond-Burton High School officials for postponing the school’s Snowcoming Dance because of the act of one student last week. The school has not announced whether the dance will be rescheduled. The student’s action, posted on YouTube, was embarrassing for the school and completely inappropriate. The school’s response was not proper either.
Thumbs up: To McHenry County College, for earning recognition as a top 150 community college by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. As a result, MCC is a finalist for a $1 million grant. The initial pool of 150 finalists was determined using public data on student outcomes, certificate completion rates and retention. While we have not always agreed with MCC’s board of directors on the college’s direction, this recognition indicates that it is very good at its primary mission.
Thumbs down: To scammers trying to defraud local businesses. Scammers continue to target local businesses by posing as ComEd representatives. During the scam, a caller says the business has late electric bills and threatens that the power will be shut off if the payments aren’t made immediately. The caller says they can accept payment over the phone by credit card or check, and asks for a call back to balance the account, a Crystal Lake police news release said. The department urges you to never provide personal information or pay for anything over the phone when you don’t believe you owe the requested funds. Attempted fraud should be reported to the Crystal Lake Police Department at 815-356-3620.
