BC-IL--Juvenile Justice-Director

Quinn appoints director for Juvenile Justice

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn has appointed a new Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice director.

Candice Jones replaces Arthur Bishop, who left last week to head the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Jones most recently served in the Governor's Office of Management and Budget. She managed the public safety budget.

She's also served as executive director of the Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission.

Jones says she's committed to helping youth become productive members of society and reducing the number of those who return to the department's custody.

The population of youth in state detention centers dropped by hundreds under Bishop.

As of Jan. 1 this year, a fewer than 900 youth were in state facilities.

Jones' appointment was made Friday and is pending Senate approval. The position pays about $120,000.
