To the Editor:
As I was reading the letter to the editor from Ray Cziczo (“Mightier than the sword?” Feb. 1), I couldn’t help but wonder whether he and I had lived in the same country for the past five years.
According to Mr. Cziczo, President Obama has accomplished nothing despite the fact “the frightened Republicans caved to his every demand.” Really?
In the country I live in, the Republicans have fought the president tooth and nail. Sen. Mitch McConnell said point blank he would do whatever it took to block anything that would help the president get re-elected. Speaker of the House John Boehner has wasted time calling for 40 votes to overturn the Affordable Care Act.
And the Democrats have been anything but slaves to the wishes of their “master.” If Mr. Cziczo were paying attention, he might have noticed President Obama has had trouble getting his own party to back him on many things.
The problem with this country is that people on both sides of the political spectrum have forgotten “compromise” is not a dirty word. It is the essence of politics. It’s how things get done. The lack of compromise is the reason nothing is accomplished.
Because of this do-nothing Congress, the president has threatened to do whatever he could through executive orders, which is his constitutional right and duty. If he oversteps his authority, the Congress and Supreme Court will be there to slap him down. That’s how it is supposed to work. President Obama is merely trying to get things done.
