Fire in ammo plant site’s outbuilding probed

EAST ALTON – Authorities are trying to pinpoint what sparked a weekend fire in an outbuilding near a southwestern Illinois ammunition plant.

No one was injured during the blaze early Sunday on the Winchester plant’s property in East Alton northeast of St. Louis.

Fire officials and the company said the fire happened at an unoccupied maintenance building that’s not part of or adjacent to the property’s production area.

The company said the site’s manufacturing wasn’t interrupted.

As many as seven local fire departments were called to help put out the fire.
