Tugboat, barges hit Ohio River interstate bridge

METRPOPOLIS – The Illinois Department of Transportation says there was no structural damage to an Interstate 24 bridge after it was hit by a tugboat pushing 15 barges.

The collision happened around midnight Thursday when the boat hit a pier as it traveled along the Ohio River.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd told WSIL-TV that the pier was the second from the Kentucky side of the river.

Inspectors say the impact of the crash caused two barges to break free and lodge against the pier.

The bridge is between Paducah, Ky. and Metropolis, Ill. It remained open. No injuries were reported.
