Our View: First step is registering

Tuesday is the deadline to register to vote in the March 18 primary election.

If you are not registered, please take the time and register. There is no greater right we have as citizens than voting.

Too many people take it for granted. Therefore, not enough people are involved in deciding who represents us in local, state and federal government.

A new state law also allows 17-year-olds to register and vote in next month’s primary as long as he or she will be 18 before the Nov. 4 general election.

If you are a new McHenry County resident or have changed addresses, you must register at the county clerk’s office, 667 Ware Road, Room 107, Woodstock. You’ll need two forms of identification, with at least one bearing a name and address.

County voters this year will elect all statewide constitutional offices, their representatives in the Illinois and U.S. houses of representatives, one U.S. senator and the 33rd District state senator. They also will elect two representatives to their McHenry County Board district and decide the countywide offices of county clerk, treasurer, sheriff and regional superintendent of schools.

All county voters will face a binding referendum asking whether the County Board chairman should be popularly elected. Other governments with referendums on the ballot include Algonquin, Bull Valley, Fox Lake, Johnsburg District 12, Huntley Park District and Nunda Township.

It’s every adult American’s right and duty to vote. It’s a cornerstone of our society that we be led by a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Your vote is your voice, and if you don’t use it, you have no right to complain.
