A question for all candidates, special taxing districts and school board officials: At what property tax rate as a percentage of (total) home value would you feel compelled to reduce budget demands of your elected office?
Appealing assessed home value means pushing the greater tax burden onto neighbors, visiting harm to others for personal benefit. By forcing that sole option as means of individual financial survival, the budget demands of McHenry County are also damaging its residents’ spirits.
Property values have declined as property tax rates have risen. Large institutional investors might seek to buy distressed local property at bargain prices, and will want the taxes on their investments lowered. The legal means which dispassionate investors might employ to achieve lower property taxes might be detrimental for the people who live and work in this county.
My 2012 property tax rate as a percentage of (total) home value was 3.285 percent.
