Appalling defiance

To the Editor:

Back in December, I attended the McHenry County College graduation ceremony.

While it was an enjoyable event, something is still bothering me. There was a group of six people sitting in front of me, and when the national anthem started playing and the two servicemen were walking the flag forward, one lady defiantly sat down and made the other four ladies with her sit as well.

Thankfully, the husband remained standing. I am still appalled at this. I have since asked many family members, friends and colleagues whether they have ever witnessed such an act, and no one has.

Maybe it was an isolated incident. Many men and women have died fighting for this country and for the freedoms we have. To witness such a blatant, defiant act of disrespect was appalling.

If these people are so against what the American flag stands for, why are they here? No one is making them stay. Heck, I’ll even help them pack their bags.
