Crystal Lake Central wrestlers go 7 for 7 in state prelims
Twenty-two local wrestlers won their first-round matches on the opening day of the Individual Wrestling State Final in Champaign.
They will advance to the quarterfinals Friday. The wins also secure a trip to the back draw should they lose before reaching the finals.
First-round losers must wait to see how their opponent fairs in the quarterfinals to see if they have any more matches. Only those wrestlers whose opponent advances to the semifinals qualify for the consolation bracket.
Crystal Lake Central qualified all seven of its wresters for the Class 2A quarterfinals. Michael Petersen (138 pounds) and Andrew Marsden (195) won by pin for the Tigers and Kyle Fugiel (170) and Mike Zelasco (182) won by major decision.
Also in 2A, Richmond-Burton’s three Sutton brothers advanced with first-round wins. Woodstock North’s Cody Barnes pinned No. 3 seed Thomas Hawkins of Chicago Hyde Park at 220.
In Class 3A, Cary-Grove’s Michael Cullen (120) won by decision and Logan Hanselmann (126) got a takedown in overtime to win.
Crystal Lake South’s Nick Gil (138) won by major decision and Eric Barone (145) won by fall. Also winning by pin were Prairie Ridge’s Travis Piotrowski (113), McHenry’s Luis Hernandez (220) and Dundee-Crown’s Jeremy Marshall (285).
