County Board District 1 (Republican): Gasser, Stieper

Published: Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014 5:30 a.m. CST

Voters in McHenry County Board District 1 in this primary have three candidates to choose from for two spots on the Republican ticket.

Fox River Grove resident Andrew Gasser and Barrington Hills resident David Stieper are challenging incumbent Robert Nowak, from Lake in the Hills.

District 1 covers southern and eastern Algonquin Township and a sliver of Grafton Township, including parts of Algonquin, Cary, Fox River Grove, Lake in the Hills and Barrington Hills.

Gasser and Stieper have targeted the size of county government and the spending that goes with it. Gasser endorses running county government like a business when examining spending, particularly administration costs on the Mental Health Board. Stieper seeks to create a more efficient county government.

Both candidates pledged to not accept the health insurance and pension benefits that come with the office.

Nowak, a four-year incumbent, said that there is not a lot of excess money in the county’s budget. He seeks to hold the line on spending.

We endorse Gasser and Stieper.
