County Board District 6 (Republican): Aavang, Schuster
Voters in McHenry County Board District 6 in this primary have three candidates to choose from for two spots on the Republican ticket.
Incumbents Ersel Schuster and Michelle Aavang are being challenged by real estate broker and farmer Larry Smith.
District 6 includes much of the western part of McHenry County, including Chemung, Alden, Hebron, Dunham, Hartland, Greenwood, Marengo, Seneca, Riley and Coral townships, and the western half of Grafton township.
Schuster, who is retired from being a counselor, has experience on the board and institutional knowledge of the county that has proven instrumental as the county evolves. Schuster hopes to be in office to see the Unified Development Ordinance go into effect. She believes the county should continue to work to reduce spending and unnecessary governmental costs. She opposes the referendum to make the County Board chairman popularly elected.
Aavang, a farmer and president of the Farm Bureau, believes the county needs to pay more attention to the agricultural community, which she believes in many ways is ignored by the board currently. She believes the county should keep the tax levy frozen. She is pleased that voters will have a chance to decide whether the County Board chairmanship should be popularly elected.
We endorse Schuster and Aavang for District 6.
