Union wants investigation into Rauner donations

SPRINGFIELD — The AFL-CIO is seeking an "emergency investigation" into gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner's (ROW-nurz) contributions to his own campaign.

The labor union asked the state executive inspector general to review the $5 million Rauner has contributed for violations of the state's procurement code.

The Republican venture capitalist from Winnetka was chairman of GTCR until October 2012. The private-equity firm has invested tens of millions of dollars for pension programs including the Teachers' Retirement System.

The procurement code prohibits businesses doing business with the state from donating to the campaign of the officeholder in charge of the contracts — in this case, the governor.

Even though Rauner quit in 2012, the code bans contributions for two years.

The Rauner campaign did not immediately comment.

The primary election is March 18.
