LITH police issue 19 distracted driving citations

LAKE IN THE HILLS – Police issued 19 citations Monday to drivers caught using their cellphones in Lake in the Hills during a special four-hour enforcement aimed at distracted drivers.

Lake in the Hills police issued the citations along Pyott Road, north of Algonquin Road, according to a department news release issued Tuesday. The special enforcement comes after a new state law, which prohibits the use of hand-held devices while driving, took effect on Jan. 1.

Illinois joined 11 other states and the District of Columbia to ban the use of hand-held devices while driving. Drivers still can use bluetooth headsets or voice commands while operating their vehicles.
