To the Editor:
It is the responsibility of the county sheriff to supervise common sense spending within his or her jurisdiction.
The County Board makes decisions based on guidance from the county administrator and the sheriff. Meeting minutes from the May 7, 2012, law and justice committee meeting show Andrew Zinke and Peter Austin collaborated on a recommendation to continue the intergovernmental agreement with the federal government to house federal prisoners at a cost of $120 per day while being reimbursed $85 per day.
One justification was that the cash flow has been significant. The minutes indicate at least 232 prisoners fall into this category. This translates to almost $3 million per year.
McHenry County citizens have their own cash flow problems with inordinately high property taxes. We need new leadership in the sheriff’s office.
Vote for Bill Prim for sheriff.
