Response to pension letter

Published: Friday, March 7, 2014 5:30 a.m. CST

To the Editor:

I would like to address a glaring omission in Louis Kosiba’s letter (“Not a ‘bonus’,” Feb 26).

Kosiba mentions the cost-of-living adjustments Social Security recipients receive. He conveniently fails to mention that members of public employees’ retirement plans also receive annual adjustments to their payments.

Another item that has been missing from the pension discussion is that public-sector benefit programs originally were designed to “level the playing field” in the days when public-sector employees were paid significantly less than private-sector employees.

Because of the efforts of public-sector employees unions, this is no longer the case, so in fairness, an adjustment of benefits would be in order.
