Response to ‘tolerance’

To the Editor:

In response to Ray Cziczo’s letter (“Tolerant,” Feb. 27), I would say that politics is a game of hypocrisy, no matter which party is in power.

Are all liberals tolerant of conservatives? Of course not, but I have to roll my eyes when he writes “conservatives are content with allowing liberals to live the lives they choose in accordance with the law.”

I wonder what he thinks about the vetoed law in Arizona that allowed businesses to ban gays from shopping in their stores. What laws were those homosexuals breaking by doing their shopping? And don’t say “God’s law,” because that doesn’t count.

And, yes, liberals were being tolerant of Condoleeza Rice, Herman Cain and Allen West because we were criticizing their ideas because we disagreed with them, not because of the color of their skin. The same goes for Sarah Palin, Christine O’Donnell and Sharon Angle. We disagreed with their politics because we thought they were wrong, not because they were women.

Compare that to the idiocy of Ted Nugent and his “subhuman mongrel” comment about the president. I’d love to hear someone try to defend that as not racist.

Religious people love to think they are becoming marginalized. How often are Christian groups discriminated against? Not often, I’d think. Keep in mind that North Carolina high school student Kalei Wilson was allowed to form a chapter of Secular Student Alliance at her school only after the ACLU got involved. She recently gave up after getting death threats.
